COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Awareness and education focused on meeting each individual’s reproductive health goals is important to us. Preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly among adolescents, is a U.S. public health priority. Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over half of U.S. teens have had sexual intercourse by the age of 18. Research has shown that students receiving information on both abstinence and birth control are less likely to become teen parents or contract STIs.
Neighborhood Health Partners continues to offer educational presentations by Registered Nurses or Nurse Practitioners to area schools and community organizations on pregnancy and STI prevention. These 50-minute educational presentations are offered in virtual format via Zoom meeting or face-to-face and aim to increase awareness of pregnancy prevention and sexually transmitted infections.
- Pregnancy Prevention
This presentation focusses on various methods of birth control, including abstinence. The effectiveness, cost, side effects, need for back up methods, and combining methods for prevention of STD/STIs are discussed.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
This presentation focuses on transmission, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and diseases. The impact of sexually transmitted infections on health, fertility, and relationships is discussed.
- Health Pregnancy/Empathy Belly Simulator
A specifically designed vest is used to demonstrate the changes a woman’s body undergoes during pregnancy. A description of the different stages of fetal development is included, along with the importance of good prenatal care.
