Venison Donation Program
The venison donation program started in 2004. Historically the DNR funded the donation program after the detection of CWD in Southern WI. The cost to donate deer in our area more than doubled due to the need to test donations prior to processing. In 2007 the DNR's ability to completely cover these costs became limited due to budget shortfalls at the state and national level. This program continued in 2007 thanks to the efforts of local community action programs, food pantries, meat processors and various donations from hunting clubs, local community organizations and hunters that donated $20 plus their deer. We were able to process 584 deer which gave us roughly 23,380 lbs of meat to distribute throughout southern Wisconsin food pantries. These numbers are significantly down from previous years.
Our goal for 2008 is to raise enough funds to cover the cost to process 2,000+ deer in Southern Wisconsin; approximately $140,000 will need to be raised to cover this cost. By supporting this program you are providing the help needed to create a bridge between donated venison (a renewable food resource), and the hungry communities.
Here is a list of the area meat processors (18Kb) participating in the Target Hunger Venison Donation program.
The biggest obstacle for the future of the venison donation program is the funding needed to pay for testing and processing of donated deer. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
